This channel is for and about the local communities of the Transition Vision area. We are always keen to welcome new volunteers. If you want to help us to produce material for this channel please contact us and we will give you all the training, support and resources that you need to make it happen. Window on the World. IT and older people
This video was made by the Wholemeal Media Company for the South West Foundation on behalf of the South West Forum on Ageing and the South West Seniors' Network for showing at the South West Seniors' Assembly on May 29th, 2013. The main topic for this conference was social inclusion in regard to older people and one of the aspects of this was the role of the internet and IT in general in helping to combat the isolation of older people.
South West Seniors' Assembly
This was a one-day conference organised by the South West Seniors Network, South West Forum on Ageing and South West Foundation which took place on March 30th, 2012 at the Taunton Conference Centre, Somerset College . Those who attended examined issues around Healthcare, Rural Transport & Social Exclusion, Quality of Life and Housing. Valerie Singleton, broadcaster and presenter, chaired the event. The Balsam Centre, part 7. Young People's Art Club
A call went out locally for any young people who were interested in joining an art club at the Balsam Centre in Wincanton, Somerset. After a slowish start a lively group formed and, under the guidance of Mariella Wolff some really creative work and lots of fun ensued. A New Life for the Shelters on Lyme Regis' Marine Parade
The "shelters" on Marine Parade on Lyme Regis' sea-front were a real eyesore for some years. The town council, after consultation with interested parties, came up with a plan to revive this prominent building in the middle of Marine Parade. Sue Holman was given a guided tour by David Gale who, in his role as client adviser, was coordinating the project for the council. Community Researchers by Southwest Foundation
Community Researcher training is offered by South West Foundation, an independent charitable organisation. The Foundation focuses on supporting small community and resident led organisations throughout the South West region. This video appears here with the kind permission of the South West Foundation. The Foundation has so far trained over 150 individuals in communities to design research projects, gather and analyse data from their communities, and finally to present that data to people with influence who can work with the researchers to bring about the change that communities want.

North Dorset's Broadband Campaign
Last year CPEND (Community Partnerships Executive North Dorset) embarked on a campaign to survey the state of broadband service throughout North Dorset and to produce a report which will inform further action to improve the provision. John Holman attended the launch of the report and subsequently interviewed Steve Adamson of DT11 Forum Community Partnership and CPEND to find out where the campaign has got to and what the next steps are. Naomi Kent: Parliamentary Outreach Worker for the South West
Conscious of the general lack of understanding of its workings, Parliament has set up an outreach department. Jan Crawley and her colleagues at the South West Foundation organised a workshop session, led by the Parliamentary outreach officer for the South West, Naomi Kent, and invited people from a range of communty groups. It was quite a problem to find anywhere quiet to interview Naomi and hyperactive peacocks have their say at one point. To find and contact your MP click here. Sites and Rights: Where Can Travellers Go?
It's hard to live on the road these days and recent legislation hasn't helped. Equally it is hard to find anywhere to stay. Up to 25% of the travelling population are estimated to be staying on unauthorised sites and face the possibility of eviction. It is easy to see how difficult life has become for travelling families. In this video, shown here with the blessing of Travellers Times and The Rural Media Company, who made it with funding from the Equality and Human Rights Commission, Luke Clements from Cardiff Law School summarises the problem: "There aren’t enough sites: and there are upwards of 3,000 families with nowhere to live." ...
Radio Sherborne streaming on the internet ...
Radio Sherborne came another step closer to getting on air with a week of live streaming on the internet from a temporary studio at the young people's drop-in centre, The Rendezvous. Community media projects are only successful if they gain local support and judging by the interest spawned by this small-scale experiment, Sherborne in Dorset seems keen on having its own radio station. A small band of volunteers manned the station and guests included the mayor and a member of the locally-based long-lived band, Penny Arcade. Survey after survey...

Adebisi Adekunle, Community Resource Worker, Gillingham and surrounding parishes
Adebisi Adekunle explains her role, created by Dorset Community Action, and the extent of the help and advice that she can give to local groups in relation to community development as outlined in the North Dorset community plan. Although there is uncertainty about what the future holds in terms of funding and also what structure will be set up for the support of rural communities, Adebisi is still able to offer worthwhile help and welcomes approaches from anyone in her area who has an idea how to improve life for the people who live there. Surviving the Cuts was a practical conference organised by Dorset Community Action in response to the cuts for voluntary and community groups in Dorset. There was an opportunity in the morning to hear from David Jenkins and Angus Campbell, chief executive and leader of Dorset County Council respectively, Chris Ricketts, Head of Health Improvement, NHS Dorset and Georgina Morgan, chief executive of Dorset Community Action. North Dorset Needs Better Broadband
Steve Adamsom and his colleagues from DT11 Forum Community Partnership decided that something should be done about the poor broadband service that many homes and businesses particularly in the more out of the way parts of North Dorset have to suffer. They have launched a campaign through the the Community Partnerships Executive North Dorset, CPEND for short, who represent Gillingham, Shaftesbury, Sturminster Newton, Stalbridge, Blandford and surrounding villages, with funding from Sowing Seeds to find out what can be done.
